Fun City Is Condom Capitol

New Yorkers are getting screwed again and again and again! The Mayor’s Management Report states that the city Health Department gave away 39,070,000 male condoms during the 2008 fiscal year. That’s more than double what was handed out the last fiscal year. It far surpasses that of the next municipality too with a similar type of program. The cost was a little over $1 million, not counting the cost of female condom products that were also given out though in lesser supply. That price is significantly cheaper than the estimated $350,000 lifetime cost of medicating a single AIDS patient. It's a good investment for city residents/lovers on many practical levels. This year, the goal is to distribute 51 million male condoms. Legitimate, distribution organizations (In other words, no eBay entrepreneur types.) may request as many as they can put to good use. Finally, a good city government program being put to good use. What a rarity. Let’s keep it up New York!

Herpes Hits NYC Hard

26% of New York City adults now carry the virus that causes genital herpes. That’s 7% higher than the national average! "Sex in the City" is obviously more than just a television show to New York’s party people. The number of people with herpes simplex virus 2 is frightening because there’s no cure. What’s more, those afflicted are more easily infected with the HIV virus. HIV causes AIDS. Statistically, those with herpes are at two to three times greater risk of getting AIDS. Almost 50% of African-Americans and 35% of Hispanics have herpes. These numbers could (Should?) scare some to celibacy. I wonder what happened to the good old days when a boy could meet an old-fashioned girl, here. You know the type. A girl who only had V.D.!

Are We The Big Apple Or The Big Banana?

Did you know that NYC has it’s own official condom? Well, as the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS epidemic with about 100,000 of New York’s 8.2 million residents infected, something radical needed to be done. Roughly 3 million free condoms a month were distributed last year by the Health Department. This year, a new ad campaign, “get some,” or “pontello (Spanish)," hopes to make an even greater impact. Free condoms are available locally in hundreds of bars, restaurants, salons and distributed by several non-profit groups. Health Department teams will also travel around the city handing them out. Hey New Yorkers! If 42nd Street could be cleaned up, make sure your sexual attractions are safer too.
